Resources In The History of California Videodisc

Sailing ships at a San Francisco wharf, 1900.

The Image Library. This videodisc contains a visual library of 1,759 carefully selected images of California's rich history.  In the accompanying Master Guide, each image has captions (articles) written at both the elementary (fourth/fifth grade) and adult/teacher levels. The images include historical events, important people, paintings and other works of art, political cartoons, charts and maps. The content is compatible with leading California history textbooks.

Overviews.
These are full-screen, sound-and-image introductions to each of the sections of the videodisc.  There are barcodes for each Overview, printed in the Master Guide.  Each of these can be used to introduce a major period of California’s history; it can also be used to review a historical period after its study has been completed.

Video Sequences.
There are 60 motion picture sequences, and again, a barcode for each in the Master Guide.  Each can be re viewed and selected for inclusion in any presentation you create.  The videos include some of Hollywood's early silent film stars, the 1935 San Diego Exposition, and the building of the Golden Gate Bridge.

The Golden Gate Bridge under construction, 1936.

The History of California Master Guide
is included, containing individual captions (articles) for every one of the 1,759 images, and for each of the 60 film clips.  There are 2 sets of the captions; one set contains captions written at elementary reading level, and the other contains captions written at full adult reading level.  Just scan the barcode printed above the caption, and the laserdisc player will instantly call the video, the image, or the narrated Overview to the TV screen --  without a computer.

Index.
The History of California Master Guide book also contains an extensive index.  Students and teachers can use the index  to locate items by name, finding just the right item in seconds.  It also contains subject headings, such as Agriculture and Mexican Americans, which can be used to prepare illustrated lectures on a wide range of different subjects.

The accompanying CD-ROM.
Laser Disc technology is durable in the classroom because it is so simple and easy to use.  However, a copy of the full History of California CD-ROM is included in the package, with all its many features.  The CD-ROM and the laserdisc are designed to be used together or separately.

Create and print out a barcoded  script.
If you are like most teachers, sooner or later you'll explore the accompanying CD-ROM.  One of the things you'll discover is that you can use the CD to select items, revise the selected captions onscreen, and then put them in any desired order. You can then print them out as a lecture script, in large type. The script can also include a barcode for each item, to call it from the videodisc to your classroom TV screen.

The Bear Flag Revolt, Sonoma, June 1846.

In addition, the CD-ROM also allows more than 800 of the images to be exported onto your computer's hard drive. You can print these images and use them in PowerPoint® and other computer programs, for non-commercial use within your school classroom.  Students may use the images in reports, and teachers can create handouts and even overhead transparencies.

Students gain EXPERIENCE
.  This videodisc is not a single-use presentation. Instead, it is an interactive resource, a library from which students can select images and captions to illustrate subjects. Working in groups or as individuals, your students  become involved in history by preparing illustrated reports for the classroom TV screen.  They gain experience in research, critical thinking, organizing data, and presenting their programs.

History of California Master Guide

One copy of the 408-page History of California Master Guide is included in the package.  You may want to purchase additional copies, so that more than one person at a time can explore the resources of the Videodisc. Designed for use with either the Videodisc or the CD-ROM, it contains a written copy of the 1,759 captions (articles) which accompany the images, as well as 60 captions for the film clips.  There are two sets of captions (articles); one at a 4th/5th grade reading level, and the other at full adult (teacher/AP) level.  The Master Guide also includes suggestions for use and a very thorough index.  PowerPoint users often use the Master Guide to locate items quickly, then pull the items directly into their presentations.
