FAQs concerning
CD-ROMs and Videodiscs
Question: Do IRC CD-ROMs work across Networks?
Answer: Yes and no. IRC CD-ROMs are not designed to operate over
networks; however, the products are designed to work easily with
PowerPoint®. PowerPoint® presentations are able to be used on networks,
and IRC allows such use in one classroom in a school building, or on a server
within a single classroom and serving only that one classroom. School-wide
and District-wide network use of PowerPoint® presentations may be arranged, on
a case-by-case basis, by calling IRC at 1-800/922-1711. Images may not be
transmitted on the internet or placed on a server serving more than one
classroom without written authorization from IRC. Images may not be sold
or incorporated in any product for resale.
Discounts: IRC also provides steep discounts for multiple copies of CD-ROMs.
Each CD-ROM is available in lab packs of 5, 10, and 25, at a low cost per CD-ROM, to allow each student to work individually with a CD-ROM.
Question: I have made a "lesson plan" presentation using the
presentation maker built into the IRC CD-ROM. How do I copy the
"lesson plan" to another computer?
Answer: As you create a lesson plan using an IRC CD-ROM, four files are
created on your computer. In the folder (directory) named IRC there is a
folder named CACD. There you will find the four files, which all have the
same name (lesson1.dbf, lesson1.fpt, etc.). Copy ALL 4 files to your
floppy disc or other media. On the computer to which you are transferring
the lesson plan, install the IRC CD-ROM, then copy ALL 4 FILES back into exactly
the same folder (IRC/CACD). Open the IRC program, and from the Main Menu
select Open A Lesson Plan. You will see the lesson plan listed,
ready to be opened.
Question: I am having difficulty printing barcodes. I am getting @56! characters. How to I print barcodes?
Answer: The installation application process fonts into the operating system on all platforms. After installing, you must reboot your system for the fonts to be noticed by the operating system. If the barcodes still do not print after rebooting, then look in the README.TXT file on the CD-ROM and follow the step to manually install the barcode font.
Question: After installing the California History CD-ROM, the National Geographic CD-ROM Picture Atlas of the World program does not function properly. Also, I
tried re-installing the Picture Atlas and it still didn't work. How do I fix
the problem?
Platform: Windows 95 or NT
Analysis: There is a file located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory named C4DLL.DLL. This file, written generically, is located in the C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory so that all of the IRC applications can use it without duplicating it several times. For some reason the National Geographic CD-ROM is overriding this local version of cb5.dll and attempting to use the C4DLL.DLL file, creating
the errors at startup.
Answer: Copy the C4DLL.DLL file to the appropriate IRC directory, e.g.
C:\IRC\AHCD, C:\IRC\WHCD, or C:\IRC\WCCD, and if you have all three application copy the c4dll.dll file to all three directories. After copying the file, delete it from the Windows\System directory. Now re-install the National Geographic application and overwrite all files. This solution will allow both applications to work at the same time.
