The History of California CD-ROM

The History of California CD-ROM is a new, special visual library covering the history of the Golden State from ancient times to the new millennium.  The CD-ROM gives students and teachers the tools to create presentations on all aspects of the state's history, with built-in presentation-making software and the right to incorporate images in presentations created with PowerPoint® and other products.  Every image has a descriptive caption at two reading levels: fourth-grade reading level, or full adult.  Along with the images, there are narrated Overviews of time periods, film clips, maps and sound recordings, all organized in a unique, flexible format.

————— Description —————

Division of California proposed in 1859

This visual library makes it easy to explore California’s history from ancient times to the present, and to create classroom presentations. Here are some of its features.

The Image Library contains 1,759 images. Each image has captions at both the elementary and regular levels. Included are people, places, events, cartoons, works of art, and many maps and charts.

The Bear Flag Revolt, Sonoma, June 1846Twelve narrated Overviews can be played on the computer screen. Each one introduces a major period in the history of California.

60 motion picture sequences, including such items as the 1906 San Francisco earthquake, the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics, and Disneyland in the 1950s, can be played on the computer screen or selected for a presentation on the classroom TV.

Sound Bytes let you and your students hear original recordings of California people and events. Along with reading about The Grapes of Wrath, for Andrés Pico, Californio officer, later state legislator example, students can hear John Steinbeck talk about the 1930s migration of dust bowl refugees to California.

The Quiz lets you select the level of questions you want (basic, intermediate or advanced) to test yourself. After answering, you can go immediately to the caption from which a question was drawn, for review -- and retention.

The Historipix Game lets students have fun while being tested on what they’ve learned and what they’ve seen.

The Santa Inéz mission at Solvang, 1898The Electronic Index is used to locate items by name. It also contains subject headings, such as Paintings, Transportation, and Agriculture, which can be used to prepare presentations on different subjects.

Cartoon about San Francisco political corruptionImporting provides a simple way to add your own digitized images to a presentation on the computer screen.

More than 800 of the images may be exported. You can print these images and use them in PowerPoint® and other computer programs, for non-commercial use within your school classroom.  Students may use the images in reports, and teachers can create handouts and even overhead transparencies.

Printing out a lecture script. After you have selected images to be used in an illustrated lecture, you can make whatever changes you want in their captions, sort them, and then print the captions as a lecture script, in large type. If you wish, you can also include a barcode for each caption, to call its image to the classroom TV screen using the videodisc.
